WELCOME TO GRADE 11 PHOTOGRAPHY!
This is our classroom blog site! It is basically an extension of our classroom, only it is online. You will have 10 exercises to complete and each will be submitted to me via email at
luisarocca1@gmail.com
at specific dates given to you in class. The deadlines to these dates need to be adhered to so we can all be together on each exercise and have the opportunity to share, comment and learn from one another. Once these images are emailed on time, I will post them and members of the class are to comment. Basically, each student is to submit a photo for the week and then provide a substantial comment. Comments need to be elaborate in the sense that saying "cool photograph" is not enough. Comments need to be specific, perhaps sharing your first impression or rely on the composition or anything that you have learned so far in the course.
Have fun with this blog since an online medium is another way for photography to be shared and enjoyed.
I am looking forward to this semester with you!
Ms. Luisa Rocca
Photo of the Week #1
LTake a creative selfie that will effectively introduce you to our class! Tell us a little bit about yourself in this image. You will need to consider all aspects of the photo for example what you are wearing, the background setting or anything you would like to include in the image. This is an exercise that is casual, fun and will get us acquainted with the way the blog works and how we can effectively contribute to this site as a positive medium for visual learning.

The camera as a reporting tool! There are a variety of photographic genres (i.e. landscape, street photography, fashion etc.) but the one we are most likely to come in contact daily is the reporting element of photography. This is found in newspapers etc. But is also found in our daily lives as we record events as we live them. It is the part of our visual world where we instantly take photographs of simple to major events (plate of food at a restaurant to a momentous event like a wedding). Your exercise is to capture an event as if you were a reporter for a newspaper. Look for human stories around you (sporting event at your school or lunch time in the cafeteria). Take the world around you as you experience it and turn it into a news worthy image! Submit your photo with a headline!

Photo of the Week #3
Create an abstract image. Use your camera as a painter would use a brush and your final image (like a canvas) is a photograph that looks like a painting. It may be blurred with colour or a close up of a larger image but your intent here is to go abstract and deconstruct the subject matter into an interesting part. When it is captured in your photographic frame of reference there is a unique and spontaneous quality about it that would resemble that of an abstract painting. Have fun with different angles, spin around the room with your camera in hand or take an image from a bird's eye view. The ideas are endless!

Photo of the Week #4
Eyes say so much! Take a photograph of a person with direct emphasis on the eyes. You may capture this image as a candid photograph or posed. It needs to express an emotion or a connection that will draw the viewer into the image with feeling. The eyes are an expressive element to any portrait and this exercise will require you to draw out a sense of communication and feeling from your model. It may take several tries or you may happen to catch it in a quick blink. Keep practising and share your best result.

Photo of the Week #5
Close up and personal! This exercise is intended for you to take an image at an extreme close up. This is called macro photography. It is allowing the viewer to have a view that is unobstructed and clear seeing details that would otherwise be missed. Consideration of the subject matter is key as well as the background and lighting. Florals and fruit are widely popular. Get real close!

Photo of the Week #6
Special Effects! Get creative and use whichever photo editing software you would like to explore the ideas that would enhance a photograph. Take any image and play with it. You may use filters, drawn images, change of colours, backgrounds etc. It can be of any subject matter you choose. Please indicate which editing software you have chosen.
Provide the before and after images.

I used snapseed as my editing software because it has an excellent amount of editing tools to create an awesome image. It's much more simpler than using photoshop because everything is straight forward. I increased the brightness by 15%, increased the saturation of the picture my 25% and decreased the exposure to -10%. I then applied a filter called HDR landscape which defines the surroundings and makes the image a lot crisper. My intentions were to take a picture of the person and the landscape in the same shot and give it a spring vibe by adding colour to it.
__________________________________________________________________________________________
To create my photo I used an app called Photo Lab found on the Apple AppStore. I chose a photo I took recently at my family's cottage and chose a filter that resembled how I felt that day: childish and whimsical. This filter added a cartoon effect to my picture of a canoe docked on an island. The unorganized items in the canoe contrasts the uniformity in the background which creates an emphasis, and draws the eye, to the canoe that is intended to be the main focus of the photograph. By simply choosing this filter and choosing my photograph, the app produced this picture. All that was left to do was adjust the colours so they would appeal to the eye. My intentions with this photo assignment were to create a fun, explorative, adventurous space through the photo, the colour, and the cartoon filter.
To edit my photo I first enhanced the photo by editing it in the iPhone photos to make the colour better. Next, for the drastic colour change, I used KVAD Photo studio and increase the hue on the photo all the way. After that I saved the photo then went back into hue and slightly decreased the hue to get a lighter colour on the photo. Lastly, after saving I went back into photos on the iPhone and selected edit and went to the light option and slightly brightened the photo to make the colours pop more. The reason I decided to change the photo this photo in this way was to brighten the photo and add an effect that makes the key elements of the photo pop. Maddie

The photo I took for blog number 6 was the speedometer in my vehicle. I used an app called "Negative Me" to produce the image into a negative. While on the app I played around with different lights and filters to get the perfect image. For this photo I wanted to portray the speed of life. One wrong mistake at a certain speed and someone's whole life could change. The title for this picture is "fast and furious"

My intentions are to create an image with a light and dark contrast so I had to play around with the app and raise the contrast
of the sunset photo so the model’s face will appear more faint in the sky.
To edit this picture that I took, I used the app called "After-light". I wanted the colours in the image to really pop and be the centre of attention for the image, which is why I made an edit that created a focal point to the eos lip balms in the palms of the hands. I added a filter called "Atlas" to the image to make the colours stand out more, and I used a lens filter that creates the lens affect from the camera to make the image more interesting. I felt like these filters helped the focal point clearer and nicer in order to relate it to the title of the image.

Provide the before and after images.
This is a picture of me playing hockey for are school varsity hockey team the bottom one is the original photo and the top one is the edited one I gave it a vintage look by making it look back and white like in the old days how players pictures were black and white I used a vintage photo filter app !

I used Picmonkey to edit my photo. The steps I took were:
1. I just the photos exposure (Highlights & Shadows)
2. Applied saturation to make the colours more bright
3. Sharpened the photo, clarified it, finer lines
4. I reversed the black and white feature to make the poster stand out
5. Finally I put a white border to finish it of

I used the photo gallery app on the Mac computer to take these photos. The first photo I had just taken a normal picture but the second one I made it so that there was four of me and I made it so that it would look like pop art.

This image is the before and after of a soccer net. I chose to do a soccer net because it already has mesh which gives it a look of a strong object but always flimsy because the mesh is not strong. The software I used to edit the photo is from the apple AppStore and it is called photo lab. This app is very helpful it let me blend as much of the picture that I wanted to . The purpose of the photo edit is to make the net the focal point of the whole photo and the rest of it as a blur. I used a editor to press the sections of the photo that I wanted to blur the areas around the net so just the net was visible. I think that also adding the darkness around the picture also made the net stand out more because it almost look like a fishbowl effect.

This week I chose to photograph Lenna and used the editing software "VSCO" to edit the picture and tone down the harshness of the lighting. I really liked how the editing software allowed me to change contrast, temperature, shadows and other things as well as just putting a general filter on it. I think that this editing software is really helpful for people just getting started with photo editing because it allows you to adjust all levels of editing. -Theresa

These photos represent a before and after. Instagram has become a driving source for pictures, so I tested it seeing how advanced editing can go. I zoomed and tilted the original photo 18 degrees to the left. I applied a chrome filter and added light and enhanced colour. Afterwards in order to really make the photo pop, I enhanced the structure and sharpened the image giving it an oil paining look. To top it off I contrasted colours to make it pop. Through Instagram I was able to change a picture into a painting.

Title: "Graffoto"
Play on "graffiti" and "photo"
About the Photo:
The app I used to edit my photo was the Instagram editing app. I used this app because I felt that this photo only needed slight editing. I wanted to keep the photo the way it was, I didn't want it to loose its original beauty. So to showcase what was already there, I put the saturation level up, to emphasize the colours. I also sharpened the image so the details on the brick and road could be easily seen. I strengthened the brightness so the photo gives a happier vibe rather than eerie, and I strengthened the shadow so it adds contrast between the colours on the wall and the darker parts in the photo. My intentions for this photo were to make the graffiti pop. The graffiti is the main part of this photo so why not showcase it? I wanted this photograph to be colourful, and I believe I accomplished just that.

The editing software I used was BeFunky, how I created my image was using the filters of Chromatic 1 and HDR 1. My intension was to make the trees, sky and my sister more brighter than the orginal photo and to make it look like the season of fall.

After taking the image I first placed it in the VSCO cam app where I placed the filter P5 on it. Upon placing P5 on it a adjusted the exposure to -1 and the contrast to +2. Finally I adjusted the saturation to -1 and then transferred the image to the PicsArt app. First I placed a artistic filter called oil on the image, which makes it appear to look more like a painting than a actual photographic image. Then finally I added a light mask to the image, called Light 1 and I adjusted the opacity to 120 as opposed to 255. This was what I did to obtain the final image.

Treasure planet
I first started off this project by taking a picture of a bath bomb that exploded with color. Blues, reds, yellows, all came soaring out. It looked exactly like a galaxy to me; which gave me the idea to transform this bath bomb into a mystical planet, that you would find in a galaxy.
Thus began my quest to make this beautiful bath bomb into a gorgeous planet. I started with an app called Enlight.
I used the filter 'Prince' to make the picture appear a bit more pink, I then used a doodle brush to put fake clouds on the picture, to make it look like it was a planet, then using the doodle brush I put tiny stars on the clouds to give it a more realistic vibe. The photo looked like this
after I had done the filter and doodle on it, I then transferred the image into another app named 'Facetune'
This app can do amazing things and alter a photo to its full potential, but I had only used it for a canvas that would crop the image into a circle so it can look more like a planet. The ending image was this.
I then took the image back to 'Enlight' to put three tiny /// to make the image have less negative space. This was the final image.
The photo was finally complete and I'm contempt with what I made, I turned a colorful bath into a beautiful planet, all by using two apps, this goes to show you what editing can do to a photo.

The title of my picture is "Emotions Shine Through"
The app I chose to start off this photo was picsart. This app has a wide variety of options on how to edit your photo. From different levels of blur, filters, effects, collages, and much, much more. I started off by taking two pictures and putting them side by side in the collage option. One picture was of my friend looking straight at the camera, and the other was a picture of her covering her face, one hand over her eyes and the other hand over her mouth. I had the idea of making something that you don't see, but is still there.
I then had to go in to the "clone" section of the app. This tool will replicate whatever you choose on to wherever you want it. I replicated the hands on to the face of the other picture. Then there is a "erase" tool and I erased where the eyes and mouth were. This made it so that the eyes and mouth of the original picture still were present.
I then took it to another app called facetune. In this app you can blur, sharpen, crop, patch, tone, and much more. This was the app where I used blur tools around the hands to make them blend in better. I also used "tone" tools to make a shadow around the lip and to blend the eyes in better. And that's it! I really enjoyed using these apps to step out of the normal photo editing that includes changing hue or saturation, I wanted to create something very different. Hence the name of the photo, "emotions shine through" is that even though she is covering her mouth and eyes to hide herself, she still has emotion and feeling under it. Instead I just brought them out and made them visible to the viewer. :) Malena

final photo on the right
The app that I’ve used to edit/create this photo is called
“InstantBlend”. This app allows you to use two photos and combine them together to create a double exposure image. It allows you to adjust the blend, for example if you want the background more visible and the overlay more faint or vise versa. Instablend gives
you that option of blending photos.
Originally, this photo is a blend of two other photos
combined into one. First, I cropped the photos into a square frame and used the sunset photo of Toronto as a background, then applied the photo of half of the model’s face as an overlay to the sunset background to create a blend of the two photos.
After the photos were blended, I increased the contrast
on the sunset photo by 20 so it would stand out more from the overlay and the colour will appear more rich. This way, the model’s upper part of her face is more visible in the sunset sky and the city stands out more at the bottom portion of the photo. Lastly,
to complement the silhouette look of the city in the background, I added a thin white border around the entire photo to make it look more clean and compact.

My photo is a photo of the school bus in the morning. After I took the photo I went on the app called Photo Editor-, while on Photo Editor- I selected my photo of the bus and started to edit. The first part of the edit was the filter (aka the effect). The effect I chose was the Avenue effect. I really liked the colour from the Avenue effect and I think it really made the bus look more colourful. After the effect comes the frame. I put and standard splatter frame on and that was that. I decided to go for the rougher over the softer look since the avenue effect looked better with the splatter. After the border I went on to lighting where there were 4 options. Option 1 is the brightness. The original brightness is 100% and I put it to 150%. Followed by brightness was the contrast. The original contrast is 100% and I put it to 150%. After contrast was the highlights which I put to 125% which is 25% more then the original 100%. After the highlights comes the shadows. The shadows lost 25% from 100% to 75%. All this colour change really did make my picture look amazing. After the lighting I went to the vignette and put a big vignette on the photo making it dark around the edges. Taylor
