The camera as a reporting tool! There are a variety of photographic genres (i.e. landscape, street photography, fashion etc.) but the one we are most likely to come in contact daily is the reporting element of photography. This is found in newspapers etc. But is also found in our daily lives as we record events as we live them. It is the part of our visual world where we instantly take photographs of simple to major events (plate of food at a restaurant to a momentous event like a wedding). Your exercise is to capture an event as if you were a reporter for a newspaper. Look for human stories around you (sporting event at your school or lunch time in the cafeteria). Take the world around you as you experience it and turn it into a news worthy image! Submit your photo with a headline!

lucas D- wow , your photo really shows a a lot and proves a lot about the world we are living in. They are cutting down or destroying golf coarse just for a profit . The tone of the picture is really dark and serious and adds to the serious tone . Well done
ReplyDeleteI will be commenting on Julia Manuba's photograph, "Special Occasions Rolled Into One, Valentine's Day and a Birthday Celebration". First off, the title defines this image to a tee. One glance at the title and you know what this image is of, very well done Julia. This image itself is definitely one captured in the moment. The effect of black and white adds to its beauty. With these effects, your eye is drawn to different parts of the photo, first to the cake which is centred in the foreground and stark white, then your eye wanders to the background where you see your family members conversing. The whole aspect of this photo is absolutely fabulous. You did a magnificent job, the headline works with this image and the photograph captures what you intended. From a photojournalisms point of view, it captures the family moments that some of us may take for granted. Many people around the world don't have a family to celebrate Valentine's Day or their own birthday with. This image reminds us that we should be thankful for these little moments in our daily lives. The image shows happiness and laughter, the things we enjoy day to day, we must remember to recognize how privileged we are, and your photo tells us that. I absolutely love your photograph, and again, very well done Julia.

This is Tony I am commenting on Kristals picture I really like this picture because it's of Toronto and I enjoy going to stuff downtown the picture relates to Toronto because of the big buildings and sign of Toronto .
ReplyDeleteMaddie: I thought your image was really good as it connects to something that everyone can relate to as its a common daily occurrence. The caption was really clever and made the picture have more of a catchy look to it. This image makes me think of my need for caffeine on days where it's hard to stay energetic! Great job Maddie!
ReplyDeleteFarzan... I really enjoy this picture it really shows "let's be Frank's" passion of his restaurant, and that he really cares about his customers because he is working on family day to make other families happy instead of spending this special day with his own family. Great job Farzan

I'm Kaleb commenting on kristals photo- the photo is in very wide scope and shows off the rink in a good quality way, the caption shows off the anticipation for going skating, and the lighting of the Toronto sign brings a pop of colour to the image. Making for an amazing visual!
ReplyDeleteFor Jessica E's Photo.
ReplyDeleteThe caption fits the picture because the black/white for the mood and the focus on the picture is the dog. From the picture, the dog does indeed look like it's searching for a caring family and that hopeful look on it's face tells the story by itself. I connect to this picture because I have a huge mushy heart for animals in general and would love to take that dog home myself.

I will be commenting on Silvana Battaglini photograph. To start off your caption really illustrates your photo, It shows how we don't do much to help make the vagabonds lives better leading them to have their safety at risk. Looking at this photo we should realize how lucky we are to have a home and some food to eat everyday. Your photo is wonderful, very well done.
ReplyDelete- Julia
Tony- Your photo really depicts the life of a hockey player, with your back turned to the camera and your jersey showing was an intelligent idea since it made it clear to us that your photo is about hockey and the position of the camera showing all the photography equipment in the back was great because it added more depth to the photo; to indicate the "life of a hockey player".

Kristal,
ReplyDeleteYour photo is simplistic and quite brilliant. The heading "It doesn't get any better than waiting for some fresh ice!" goes elegantly with your picture. Your photo is very nice and you beautifully show the crowd in the background. This photo screams excitement and grabbed my attention, for not only showing the ice rink but the building behind it. This photo is unique for having different focus points but one message: "It doesn't get any better than waiting for some fresh ice!"

Silvana,
ReplyDeleteI think that your photo is extremely enlightening and it really captures the reality in that this is an ongoing issue in the world. I found that your caption really related and reflected greatly upon the photo with asking the question "their safety at risk?" and then showing the man laying on the snowy ground with nothing but newspapers to attempt in keeping him warm. This was a very powerful and eye-catching photo that evokes a sense of injustice in the world we live in. Good job!

Kaleb, I enjoy your photo of the moon in it's simplistic way because it's the only thing photographed in the blue sky, which draws all attention towards the moon. Normally you're not able to see the moon physically during the day, but this photo represents how the moon acts as a shadow that hovers around the sun. This photo composes a different set of opposite meanings, because the sun and moon are opposites to each other. For example, that you can't be truly happy without experiencing sadness, that you can't wake up in the day without sleeping at night, that you can't see the light without darkness, these opposites go hand in hand with each other just like the sun and the moon. Good eye Kaleb!
ReplyDeleteTaylor, I very much liked your photo as I feel it really represented the spirit of the game. It gave you a perfect view of what was really going on during the game, and a sense of connection and respect between the athletes. The fact that you gave us a paragraph for a caption let everyone truly know what was going on during the time when the photo was taken, and shows the effort you put into understanding what was truly going on in the photo, which allows you to document the event in the best way possible. Great job Taylor!

Kristal,
ReplyDeleteI really like the picture that you have taken. I like the bright colour that are shown, the caption goes very well with the photo you took. This picture could really catch peoples eye and interest them to go skating in Toronto. I really enjoy how there are a variety of things in the image, but the main focus is on the "Toronto" sign with different colours, this will really catch peoples eyes. Good job Kristal!

Sarah,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your photo, sometimes we all need a good story that is heartwarming. I really like the height you took the photo at, it really shows her love for the dog that has finally been reunited with its family after being away for so long. Nice work Sarah!

Silvana,
ReplyDeleteI really liked your photo. I feel like it's really deep and meaningful. I see a man laying on the street and covering himself with fliers as blankets. Since this is in Canada I'm assuming it's very very cold and these harsh weather conditions must be cruel to sleep through. It's hard to realize that not everybody has a place to call home where they can sleep or live comfortably. Another aspect I noticed was that he has an empty bottle of alcohol beside him and one in his hand. This speaks about his habits and where his money goes. This photo makes me think more, and think about how I should appreciate everything I have and not take simple things for granted. We don't see these images everyday, but they are for sure closer to us than we think. It's a reality that is active amoung many people's lives, and it's best to be aware and help as much as possible.

Jessica,
ReplyDeleteYou're picture and quote perfectly sum up the emotional and unfortunate truth that is orphan dogs and the shelters they live in. I really enjoy how you tied in the photo of the dog being distant in the shot. The picture you took is more than just the dog but the setting that allows the emotion to be shown. The angle of the photo being low at the level of the dog showcases the situation seen and the dog and environment. As well the black and white filter you chose really embraces the tone of this shot and the feeling of a recent picture mixed with the possibility of it being from the past. This universal black and white filter really shows that this is an issue that has been present through time. The angle, the filter, the content, and the environment do a great job of revealing the emotions and the issue that is occurring today. It aids in shedding light on this common issue seen regularly and adds an element that taps into sadness and insists you make a change and gel these animals.

I'm commenting on Kristals photo,
ReplyDeleteI believe that your photo captures the true environment of the city of Toronto and the season of winter. I like how you used the nature light to capture the time of the event and the situation in the in the photo itself .
Christine,
ReplyDeleteI am commenting on your picture because it is a very unique capture and I can also relate to a similar situation. When I was younger my family went skiing and someone cut off my sister so she ran into a fence and hit her head almost leaving her unconscious. I think your photo represents a serious situation where people need to be more careful. I love the way the background is incorporated and the angle you used to have the ski resort as well as the hill included.

Tony's photo- this image has a lot of meaning to it, it shows dedication and commitment to a sport he loves. Which means putting it before anything else. This photo represents his life as a hockey player. Playing a sport he loves comes before anything else effects his life, priorities.
ReplyDeleteI'm Alex and I chose to comment on Kevin's photo of the car because I really liked the angle of the photo and how clear you can see all of the details that are on the car. I like the filter that he chose also because it gives the photo somewhat of a vintage look which really stood out from most of the other pictures. Besides the angle and filtering of Kevin's photo I think overall it is simplistic and elegant and I am quite impressed. Great job Kevin way to go

I'm Jessica and I chose to comment on kalebs post, I like the way you were able to zoom in enough to see the detail in the moon down to the craters themselves, and how you used the shadow of night light outside to create a shadow on part of the photo , this photo reminds me of the cottage I go every year and how the moon always is the most promenent sight when it turns night
ReplyDeleteKevin's photo - this is a beautiful photograph depicting a great vehicle and company. The angle of this photo makes it appear to be larger than life and very sharp. further more the Mercedes benzene gives gives it depth. the fact that you also made the photo black and white gives it a older look with a more simplistic tone. overall it is an amazing photograph and i hope to see more like it.
ReplyDeleteI'm commenting on Jessica Mendoza's photo, i like how in her landscape her model was the only one on the hill, drawing all the focus to her. The angle she choose shows that she got involved in her shot. She took the time to kneel down and find the great angle.
